Aquatic (Pool/Water) Therapy

For medical emergencies call 911.

IPMR Services

Aquatic therapy is skilled physical therapy in water. By performing therapeutic exercises in a warm water pool, patients find it easier to move and often experience less pain.

  • The buoyancy of water unloads joints and enables greater pain-free movement
  • The neutral warmth of water decreases pain and relaxes muscles
  • The resistance of water provides an excellent medium for increasing strength and endurance.

Talk to your doctor to find out if pool therapy is appropriate for you.

What does the program include?

Following an evaluation, one of our licensed therapists will design a program of movement and exercise to meet your individual needs. Both individual and group sessions are available, and all programs are supervised by a licensed therapist. Initial and weekly progress reports are sent to your referring physician.

Who can benefit from this program?

Pool therapy may be beneficial if you are currently under a doctor's care for an acute or chronic injury or condition. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Arthritis
  • Back or Neck injury
  • Chronic Pain
  • Stroke
  • Spinal Cord injury
  • Head injuries
  • Status post joint replacement
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Pediatric conditions
  • Neurologic disorders

Patients do not need to know how to swim for this program.

This is not simply a water exercise class where all participants go through the same movements. Rather, aquatic therapy is part of an individual treatment plan prescribed by your doctor. Sessions are performed at a therapeutic pool with a water temperature of 88–94°F. A doctor's referral is required. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about whether pool therapy is appropriate for you. IPMR pool therapy is offered in conjunction with the YWCA in Pekin and Peoria.
