Physicians may order an EMG/NCV for an individual who has significant numbness, weakness or pain sensations, to help determine the cause.
EMG/NCV tests are frequently ordered for diagnosing neuromuscular problems, like carpal tunnel syndrome or a herniated disc. They may also be used to detect abnormal electrical activity that may indicate a disease such as muscular dystrophy or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
EMG or Electromyogram is an electrical diagnostic test that provides information about abnormal conditions in the muscles. A very fine electrode needle is placed in selected muscles to pick up electrical signals produced by the muscles. Audible signals are produced as well as visualized on a screen. These are evaluated by a physician specializing in physical medicine and trained to interpret these findings.
NCV or Nerve Conduction Velocity is an electrical diagnostic test that provides information about abnormal conditions in the nerves. Nerves are stimulated with small electrical impulses. The resulting nerve impulses are then measured and the outcome is interpreted by the IPMR physician.
