The overall goal of occupational therapy is to reduce the effects of disease or injury, prevent further disability, and assist the patient in using available skills at the highest possible level after a debilitating disease or injury.
Our staff of licensed occupational therapists and certified occupational therapist assistants help people with disabilities relearn activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, personal hygiene, homemaking, and bathroom transfers.
Occupational therapy may involve learning how to use adaptive techniques or equipment. In the hospital we focus initially on mobility, bowel and bladder training and upper extremity function. More specialized life skills follow: homemaking, driving, or work-related skills, for example. For patients who have difficulty in depth perception or thinking clearly, occupational therapy incorporates perception/cognition training into treatment plans.
If you've had surgery or an injury to the hand, wrist or arm, or have a medical condition like carpal tunnel, you may require hand therapy and/or splinting. Your therapist may use one of several techniques, and will custom measure for splints for the best outcome.
IPMR occupational therapists have been trained and tested on all modalities (for example, ultrasound, fluidotherapy, iontophoresis, etc.). If you are being treated for an upper extremity problem, rather than having to schedule multiple appointments for both occupational and physical therapy, your occupational therapist can carry out your treatment plan if you prefer.
