Memory Disorders Program

Early and accurate diagnosis of memory problems allows treatment of reversible disorders and better management of conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

How do you know if it's dementia? A number of medical conditions, including depression, can cause memory loss. Some conditions, like vitamin deficiencies or depression, are treatable and normal memory functions can return after treatment.

Other conditions, including Alzheimer's and other dementias, cannot be cured, but the impact of the disease may be slowed with medications. Sometimes an individual or a family member delays an assessment because they're afraid of what they may find out.

Early and accurate diagnosis optimizes drug therapies for symptomatic treatment and allows families to prepare for changes that come with many forms of dementia.

The IPMR Memory Disorders Program:

  • Initial physical evaluation by an M.D.
  • Additional testing as needed
  • Family conference to discuss the evaluation findings
  • Education and support
  • Communication with referring physicians
  • Scheduled follow-ups to track the disorder and assist with solutions

IPMR has been designated as a Primary Provider Site by the Illinois Department of Public Health in conjunction with the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders.

By following the SIU protocols, IPMR not only improves the quality of life of the patients and families who get accurate and timely information, but we also contribute to the body of knowledge about Alzheimer's and related dementias, bringing research closer to unraveling these devastating diseases.
