Occupational Therapy

We help patients return to daily activities at the highest possible level. Occupational therapy may reduce the effects of disease or injury, prevent further disability, and assist the patient in using available skills at the highest possible level after a debilitating disease or injury.

Our staff of licensed occupational therapists and certified occupational therapist assistants help people with disabilities relearn activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, personal hygiene, homemaking, and bathroom transfers.

Occupational therapy may involve learning how to use adaptive techniques or equipment. In the hospital we focus initially on mobility, bowel and bladder training and upper extremity function. More specialized life skills follow for example, homemaking, driving and work-related skills. For patients who have difficulty in depth perception or thinking clearly, occupational therapy incorporates perception/cognition training into treatment plans.

For patients who have had surgery or an injury to the hand, wrist or arm, or have a medical condition like carpal tunnel, treatments may require hand therapy and/or splinting. The therapist may use one of several techniques and will custom measure for splints for the best outcome.

For those being treated for an upper extremity problem, rather than having to schedule multiple appointments for both occupational and physical therapy, our occupational therapist can carry out your treatment plan if you prefer.
