Pain Management
The pain management program at IPMR is a comprehensive physician-based approach to managing pain due to arthritis, injury, overuse or previous surgery.
We take a holistic approach to pain management.
Because IPMR offers physician, therapy, psychology and wellness services, we are able to take a more comprehensive approach. This permits long term solutions to be developed rather than focusing on short-term relief that does not resolve the underlying problems.
Physical therapy deals with pain relief using modalities such as ultrasound, heat or electrical stimulation. Physical therapists often employ stretching and/or strengthening exercises, aerobic conditioning, aquatic therapy and massage.
Occupational therapy may address problems related to the neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Both use individualized treatment plans to focus on getting the problem identified and resolved.
Treatment plans are designed to identify and resolve problems.
Our Physician helps pinpoint the problem and get you started on a course of action. Doing nothing about acute pain leads to poorer outcomes, and may lead to a chronic or permanent problem. IPMR physicians will determine if the condition requires urgent or emergency treatment. Most back pain does not, but can be treated conservatively (i.e. without surgery). They may recommend over-the-counter medications or prescribe medications to relieve discomfort. They will advise you what to avoid—such as bedrest—that can worsen pain. And they will get you started on a course of action specific to your condition using therapy, exercise, interventional techniques (injections) and/or education.
Appropriate medications are coupled with therapy.
Musculoskeletal or "mechanical" problems are generally not solved by pain medication only. Medication history and use is reviewed and suggested changes are made as needed. Appropriate medications, coupled with therapy, body mechanics education and home exercise can often be used to effectively manage pain.
If medication and therapy don't work, IPMR physicians can use several type of injections. Our doctors are specially trained to perform trigger point injections, epidurals, facet blocks, and Botox injections for pain or spasticity.
